Moving Boxes Battery Park City

Battery Park City is a bucolic planned community begun in 1972 spanning 92 acres at the southwestern tip of Lower Manhattan in New York City, tucked between the harbor and Financial District and adjacent to TriBeCa. The quiet streets, safe neighborhood and endless outdoor activities–from running and biking to boating and Little League games–all make this the perfect place to raise a family. It’s convenient location also make this Manhattan neighborhood a desirable location for professionals and financiers.

Battery Park City is surrounded by the tidal estuary of the Hudson River from the north, west, and south. Separating the Financial District of Lower Manhattan, the neighborhood lies east of West Street and is home to Castle Clinton, a fort dating back to the 1880’s.

Castle Clinton, originally named the West Battery was a fort built for the War of 1812, named for New York Mayor DeWitt Clinton. When New York City leased the property–renaming it after Mayor Clinton–Castle Clinton was popular as both a promenade and beer garden.

Importantly, Castle Clinton was converted into the premier American theatrical venue, largely contributing to NYC’s status as the theater capital of the US. The property was made a National Monument in 1946, and finally restored in 1975 by the National Park Service.

Becoming the site for ticket purchases for ferries to Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty, Castle Clinton sees millions of visitors each year–making it the most popular National Monument in the US, according the National Park Service.

Developed on a landfill, more than a third of the Battery Park City neighborhood in New York City is parkland. Excavated from more than 3 million cubic yards of rock and soil during the World Trade Center & New York City Water Tunnel constructions, Battery Park City was an extensive reclamation of the Hudson River and from sand dredged off nearby Staten Island.

Adjacent to Battery Park City during the 19th Century and early 20th Century, was the area known as Little Syria for its Armenian, Greek, and Lebanese ethnic group residents. Largely an Arab-American neighborhood, this southeastern area of Battery Park City thrived from the late 1880’s to the 1940’s, was bound by Washington Street from Battery Park to Rector Street.

Arab Christians fleeing religious persecution and poverty in the home countries under the governance of the Ottoman Empire, found American missionaries promising The American Dream.

Escaping their dangerous and deleterious living conditions by relocating to NYC, Arab Christian immigrants came on the promise of religious freedom and for a stable financial future. After many residents became successful, they moved to other areas, many eventually resettling in Brooklyn.

Originally a thriving maritime hub for seaport traffic, Battery Park City became a casualty of modernization. By the 1950’s, Port Elizabeth in New Jersey caused the formerly prosperous area to become a horizon of dilapidated shipping piers when most ocean-bound container shipping and sea traffic moved to the more modern New Jersey port.

The reclamation from the Hudson was originally proposed in the 1960’s by private firms and were supported by the New York City mayor.

Complicated by then Governor Nelson Rockefeller’s attempt to redevelop Battery Park into a separate project, it wasn’t until 1966 that the development was given the official go-ahead. Architect Wallace K. Harrison was originally responsible for the original plans which were for a ‘comprehensive community’ made up of residential housing, light industry, and social infrastructure with M. Paul Friedberg responsible for landscaping the park and Winter Garden.

After construction delays lasting into the late 1970’s, the landfill’s title was transferred to the Battery Park City Authority who hired Alex Cooper and Stanton Eckstut to create a more viable plan for the community.

The neighborhood, formerly the site of the World Financial Center along with numerous housing, commercial and retail buildings, the development is made up of roughly five major sections.

Home to Brookfield Place–once the World Financial Center–Battery Park City is comprised of housing, retail, and commercial buildings named for its eponymous adjacent park. Designed by César Pelli, Brookfield Place has hosted many world famous companies such as Merrill Lynch, RBC Capital Markets, Nomura Group, American Express and its namesake, Brookfield Asset Management. Brookfield Place even has its very own zip code: 10281.

Residents are separated into the northern and southern sections by Brookfield Place, With the southern section containing residential apartments including Gateway Plaza and Rector Place. However the northern section is comprised of only large twenty to forty-five story brick buildings.

Home to supermarkets, restaurants, and movie theaters, Battery City Park is considered a bit of suburbia in the bustling metropolis of Manhattan, albeit a corporately driven one.

Goldman Sachs, the famed financial services firm completed a 43-story office building for $2.1 billion in 2009 creating with it a so-called main street dubbed Goldman Alley where families and friends meet to eat after ballgames. Lined with eateries and shopping establishments, the area caters to not only families but the financiers working in the Goldman offices.

The Conrad, a New York City luxury hotel also attracts many diners and tourists to the area for not only its 463-suite guestrooms, but also for The Conrad’s high-end restaurants and bars such as the ATRIO Wine Bar Restaurant, the Loopy Doopy Rooftop Bar, El Vez, and Danny Meyer’s restaurants such as North End Grill, Blue Smoke, and Shake Shack. Battery Park City has dining options for every palate!

Notable Battery Park City residents have included model Tyra Banks, actor Leonardo DiCaprio, actor & comedian Sacha Baron Cohen and his wife, actress Isla Fisher, Depeche Mode lead singer Dave Gahan, and Kim Kardashian’s short-term husband, basketball player Kris Humphries.

Horribly, Battery Park City had to be evacuated in the wake of the horrific September 11th terror attacks in 2001. Many displaced residents found themselves unable to return to their homes or retrieve their personal items when Battery Park City was named an official crime scene following the attacks. When they were finally able to return to their homes, many found their apartments not only looted but more detrimental to their health, they found Battery Park still filled with toxic smoke from the fires that burned from the World Trade Center until January 2002. Many of these residents left and never came back.

with incentives by landlords including temporarily reduced rents bolstered by government subsidies, and coupled With the development and construction of 1 World Trade Center & the 9/11 Memorial, many people have since rediscovered and come back to the now thriving New York City neighborhood. Now more crowded than ever before–a frequent complaint lodged by residents–most love Battery Park’s waterfront out-of-the-way atmosphere.
